Hat head. Toque head. Call it what you want. It is impossible to have good hair once the snow flies.

This was never an issue when I was young and stubborn. Pride would not allow me to wear a hat in the winter, lest my ‘do get squashed. It was also the ‘80s, a time when big hair was a must and there was no way I would flatten it with any kind of hat, regardless of temperature or windchill.

Now that I am older and wiser, I will do anything to stay warm, fashion be damned. I also spend far less time on my hair so I do not feel anything has been wasted by keeping my head warm. My flat, straight, short and mom-practical haircut is very amenable to hat-wearing.

As a mom, I have to insist on hat-wearing when it is cold. It is just what moms do, isn’t it? Fortunately, our daughter is too young to care about her hair right now, so I have that little battle to look forward to later on. For now, I notice that the effort I put into styling her hair is rather pointless once we leave the house. The disappointment I feel when eyeing the static and mess created by her hat is an ironic little bit of karma for me.

I used to think that parents of boys had it easier, what with the short hair and all. But then one of the dad’s at school pointed out how his son’s hair stood up after pulling his hat off every morning. He was even considering a buzz cut for his son until spring came.

Oh well, it is winter in Alberta and it is cold. Just a few more months of bad hair for everyone until the thaw.
